예술가에게 가장 좋은 스튜디오는 어떠한 조건을 만족해야 하는가? 창의성과 영감을 불어넣어 주면서 자연과 가까이 있는 스튜디오라면 그 답이 될 수 있을 것 같았다. 풍수지리적으로 제일 좋은 자리로 평가받던 “배산임수”에 해당하는 부지를 선정해 인근 하천과 시내 풍경을 내려다볼 수 있도록 방향성을 강조하며 설계했다. 또한 예술가의 상상력을 자극하기 위해 다양한 높낮이의 공간과 어디에서도 일관되게 태백 시내를 내려다볼 수 있도록 디자인했다.
자연환경에 위치한 만큼 산과 어떻게 하면 조화를 이룰 수 있을지 큰 고민을 했고, 그 결과 도시에서 봐도 자연스럽도록 한국에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 바위산의 형태를 차용했다. 우뚝 솟은 바위산은 마치 높고 각지면서 통일감 있지만 서로 미묘하게 다른 여러 매스들의 집합으로 이루어져 있다고 생각했다. 이에 높이가 다른 4개의 매스를 다양하게 변형하고 풍화 현상에서 영감을 얻어 풍경을 안으로 품는 듯한 형태의 스튜디오를 만들었다.
This project began with this question—what kind of environment best develops artistic imagination? The ideal artist’s studio should not only provide creativity and inspiration but also have a strong connection with nature. I selected here that embodies the Korean geomantic concept of Baesanimsu (a mountain at the back and water at the front), allowing the studio to look both the nearby stream and the view of Taebaek city. The orientation of the building emphasizes this relationship between city and landscape.
In order to spark artistic imagination, the interior organizes spaces of varying heights, offering a consistent panoramic view of Taebaek city from every point. Being positioned within a natural landscape raised the challenge of creating harmony with the surrounding mountains. The design draws inspiration from the form of the rocky mountains, often found across Korea—massive, unified, yet slightly distinct. Four distinct volumes come together to form a cohesive composition. The design of the studio draws from the weathered forms found in nature, mimicking the gradual erosion that shapes the landscape, resulting in a space that feels like it contains the surrounding environment inward.

Design Process
Step1. 바위산의 형태를 본떠 4개의 서로 다른 사각형 매스를 디자인했다.
Designing four different rectangular masses inspired by the shape of rocky mountains.
Step2. 4개의 다양한 높낮이의 돌을 산의 형태로 배치했다.
Four stones of varying heights were arranged to resemble the form of a mountain.
Step3. 기울임과 회전을 통해 자연스러운 바위산의 형상을 본떠 만든다.

Step4. 내부로 풍경을 담을 수 있도록 입면을 디자인했다.
The facades were designed in order to capture the landscape within the interior spaces.
